Would you drink a good wine from a plastic cup? Exactly.
To fully develop the aroma of a high-quality mezcal, you should serve it in traditional gourd shells – known as jícaras . These come from the calabash tree and are not only beautiful but also functional: their larger surface area and slightly rough interior naturally intensify the flavor.
Tradition & Craftsmanship
In the Mexican mezcal regions, jícaras are the preferred drinking vessel – both in everyday life and at tastings in distilleries. Each bowl is hand-carved in the state of Oaxaca , often decorated with intricate reliefs of flora and fauna.
Unique – just like your taste
The drinking opening (5–10 cm in diameter) allows you to fully inhale the aroma of the mezcal – a sensual experience with every sip. Thanks to their natural origin, jícaras vary in color, shape, and size (approx. 20–130 ml). Each one is unique.
A simple ring made of woven reeds serves as a base. They are also visually striking – whether for mezcal, tequila, or other special spirits.
Important NOTE:
Please note: Natural variations are not a defect, but part of the authentic charm. Before first use, the bowls should be briefly moistened and allowed to swell. Initially, small drops may appear on the bottom or sides – this is normal! The pores of the bottle gourd will close over time.
